What is the best way to break up cement slab?

Answers:
Get a jackhammer or even better a tractor with a jackhammer bit.

For smaller amounts, a sledgehammer and a pointed chisel (designed for cement, not wood), very time consuming and hard to do. If it isn't too thick, another way is to saw around the area you desire to be removed and drill a hole so you can insert an iron bar and lift the slab out.

sledgehammer
sledgehammer
hit it with a sledge hammer
With a jack hammer...you should have a place in town where you can rent one for fairly cheap. if not that...then a sledge hammer and a crow bar. But that is a lot of work and you could pretty easily smash your hand, foot, or other vital body parts. So I would spring for the rental fee.

Either way...be sure to wear safety goggles...there will be cement flying everywhere and you don't want to loose an eye.
Use a pry bar to pry it up.leave the bar in then it with a sledge hammer
If you have a rent all business in your area, a jack hammer would be a lot easier than a sledgehammer
I've tried the sledgehammer bit, but there's actually a tool called a hammer drill you can rent for this purpose. It's very cumbersome and can be dangerous unless you've the upper strength to control it. Wear protective clothing and safety GOGGLES as chips can fly inside regular safety glasses. Good luck with the slab. If you decide to stick with the sledge hammer, it's usually easier to start at an outside corner (and you should still wear protective eyewear).
The best way to break up cement slab is with a big jackhammer and a whole lot of muscle.
go to your local building center and rent a sledgehammer. you can rent them by the day.
Get someone else to do it. no I'm not joking. Get a bid on the job, to include hauling away broken concrete. When you look at the time and money it will take to drive to the rental yard, rent the equipment, use the equipment, time it takes to break up, then load, haul away and pay some landfill to take it, it will cost a fair some. I think in the long run you may be better paying a Handyman an extra hundred or two is worth it. Save your back as well. Is there any way you can cap the old drive way? If not, for as much time as it may take you to break up your driveway I would go get yourself a nice Hilti Hammer and when I say get I mean buy. When you get started on this project your back may not be into the game. You will get tired of it quickly. Best to have the Hilti hammer in the garage and work on the drive a little at a time. If you rent it you will have to commit to getting it done, pay for a lot of days or rent and return and then rent again. You should have a nice pair of bolt cutters as well. If the drive was put down right, it will have rebar or welded wire in the crete. Another way is to rent a backhoe (if you can work one) or hire an owner operator. Hope this helps. Best of luck.
