Any special hints for applying Venetian plaster?

I'm going to be applying Venetian plaster to a ceiling inset. Should I burnish or just apply a protective coating.

i saw this done today on a tv program they put it on in random strokes with a wide putty knife. burnishing i dont know about the venitian stuff is meant to look rustic not a smooth finish.

Your playing with fire. But that's just my opinion and I'm a painting contractor. I recommend paying the money for an experienced plasterer to come and do it right, unless your home isnt pristene, or you dont mind experimenting. Oh well..good luck
