Can marble tile be painted? We have it around our fireplace.?
Answers:
Before I would paint a fireplace surround, I'd look into putting a different marble, granite or tile overlay. It really isn't hard to do if you can follow directions.
There are very few "fire proof" paints. Most that I know of are industrial grade and need a surface much rougher than a tile. I doubt that you can rough up tile to get the kind of surface needed to bond the paint to the tile.
Another problem is the relative expansion of the paint and tile when there is a fire in the fireplace and that will cause the paint to flake off.

Yes, you can paint mable. Rough up the surface by sanding lightly with 150 grit sandpaper.

yes u can just rough it up then paint but i don't think marble tile is a good idea next to a firplace
Wouldn't recommend it & such a shame to paint over such a fantastic surface...I'd suggest creating a lightwood frame that fits closely over the marble and paint that instead.
Also, the fireplace is probably quite valuable as its marble...
OOh - almost forgot - get it fireproofed of course!!
Don't ruin nice marble.
But if thats what you want, I think you would have to primer it after you sand it.
Terrible shame to ruin it.
I agree, if you sand it, prime it, and then paint it you should be fine, but you will run into trouble using the wrong paint near a fire place. I call a local fireplace store and ask them if they reccomend a fire proof paint. I might also suggest that if you never intend to go back to the marble, that you could tile right over it any color you want.
Paint can cover almost everything - and usually never can be removed without much pain & suffering
But marble is TOO good for paint - is there no other way??
is there time to find another loving-marble design
yes
