the room length multiplied by the room width
First, you need the dimensions of the room you're carpeting, how long and wide it is. Then you multiply the two numbers, and get sq. feet. This is the number you'll need to buy - carpets sell in sq. feet.

For example, if I had a room that was 30 feet wide and 40 feet long, I'd multiply 30 ft x 40 ft = 1200 sq. ft.
You have to measure the widest part of the room and the longest part of the room. Most places now work in metric so you would need to measure in metres. You would then times the length by the width to get your metre squared as they sell that way. so if it is 4m wide by 5m long you would need a carpet that is 20 meters squared.
either feet or metre sq
Well! the replies you got so far wont help you. Carpet is sold in a standard width 4mt wide (13 ft),sometimes 12ft wide and as long as you like.
Say the width was 10'6" and the length 15ft that would require a carpet 13ft x 15ft, this is what you are charged for. So for a small area like 8'x8' you might better with an off cut,as you would still be paying for the 13ft, width.
Hope this helps.
