Are halogen undercabinet lights recommended or do they generate too much heat?
Answers:
Go with zenon under cabinet lights.
Other answers:
Stick with mirrored LEDs. Less heat and MUCH less power consumption. Halogens are likely to burn or char wooden cabinets.

If you are talking about the "puck" type, YES! They generate a LOT OF HEAT!!
I have a set of them and I was thinking of the same thing, putting them where they would do the most good, but, after having them on for a time, and seeing the tremendous heat that comes from them, I thought, NO WAY!
I have them in my basement, over my work bench, suspended on 3 inch screws, hanging down, from the floor joists, so that the heat doesnt affect anything, and its safe that way. They only get turned on when I use the work bench and turned off immediately afterwards.
For something that is only a supposed 12 volts, there is too much heat for me to be happy with, puttting them in my kitchen.
I wish you well..

You can purchase low voltage/ low profile halogen light kits that are specifically made for mounting under cabinets either on the surface or recessed. There called canister lights or halogen spotlights.
