Your walls are the background, paint them in a color that would accent the theme....nstead of painting the characters on the wall. You can get pieces of wood or canvas and paint his favorite characters on it and frame it like art. You could add a small picture light or uplight to highlight the art. To make his room really look good...make sure the sheets and blankets are not in competition with the rest of the room. It's usually best to keep them in a solid color or a print that looks solid when you're squinting. Then you can add pillows in the theme. Hide the clutter in baskets or boxes....it will add to the modern feel and help with organization. The baskets/boxes could be painted with the characters as well.
