what are some great ways to decorate your home, look like you spent alot, and did everything affordably?
Answers:
Try to keep a limit on how many colors you use. Use the same metal tones in the room like all gold or all silver. Use some black in the room for good contrast with other colors. Don't clutter your space. A couple of nice items will show off nicely while a lot of cheap stuff will cost the same and will just overload your senses and nothing is seen properly. Paint is great and cheap and makes the biggest impact on the room. Paint to match or show off your belongings. Don't buy belongings to match your paint. Material. Make pillows with one side expensive material and the other side inexpensive.

Clutered walls. Movie posters, pictures of family, god eyes (a type of string art), book shelfs full of used books, using objects (such as a small metal vases or your sterio system). Also if you know ceramics, you could do ceramics and put them all around the house. I spent like $35 on painting and firinf a large ceramic dragon that's selling in the stores for like $500.

The first thing I do is look at the new stuff at Pier One and other furniture stores to see whats out there that I like. Then I go to the Thrift Store to see what comes close and whether or not I can modify/convert to fit need/tastes.
After my divorce, I completely set up my living room, kitchen and bath including furniture, TV, dishes, pots/pans (Calphalon and other commercial grade ware), wall hangings, curtains etc... for $350!!
I managed all that by using thrift stores, dollar stores and Big Lots AND A LOT OF PATIENCE! I wasn't able to get everything I wanted right away, many things I waited until I found exactly what I wanted. I wasn't in such a hurry to save money that I would buy something just to fill a gap.
shop at yard sales. they have good stuff and very cheap.
Paint. It makes everything look clean, fresh, and modern. Find really cool fabrics-make pillows, cover tables, etc. Mirrors make rooms look larger & at night with the lights dimmed and a nice tray of candles in front adds a fabulous glow to the space.Did I mention dimmers--a must. One really huge nice houseplant like a palm (classic). Remove clutter & tsotskes. Frame photos or black & white prints in a grouping of VERY similar frames.
