You see it depends on what you are going for.

Blue or off-white.

Grey slate floor, for the walls, start at the bottom with a sand colour (Sorry USA color) and fade gradually up the walls to a barley white at the top? Yes?
BURNT ORANGE WITH WHITE SCURTING BOARDS, ] [ KAKI GREEN WITH CREAM SKIRTING BOARDS] BURGANDY WITH CREAM SKIRTING BOARDS] go with the darker colors than your sofa.
I would go with Chartreuse...or maybe Mauve. Only because I have no idea what those colors actually look like...I just think they sound cool when spoken aloud!
How about a nice, soft gold color? (Behr has Claire De Lune--check the color card for other shades.) Brown and gold are accented well with some nice deep brick reds and dark cactus greens.
It depends on what the rest of the rooms motif is, but I would go for a warm red hue or a sky blue. Blue, brown and cream is a great combo along with red, brown and blue. My kitchen, which I just painted, has red walls, cream trimming and cabinets, blue toll patterned curtains, a dark wook bistro table and chair set, and a red/blue oriental rug. It looks fabulous!
BEEN PAINTING OVER 30 YEARS = NEUTRAL COLOR GOES WITH ANYTHING YOU PUT IN A ROOM. THATS AS EARTHTONE AS THERE IS.
I Just painted in my house...I painted my living room "maple sugar" by Porter paint...check that out. It turned out VERY nice..it's a brown color that looks great against the white trim and valted ceilings. I think it would go nice with any earth tone you chose for the rest of the house.
Sage and tans. Sage is a really calming color...I love it. It would look very nice with any color of brown. :o)
