How do i formulate sponge painted walls smooth?

The bottom 1/2 of my walls are sponge painted, and the top 1/2 is just white... i want to re-do the room and paint it adjectives brown, and have the integral wall smooth... how do i go nearly starting this project and getting the roughness of the sponge paint off the walls?
