Drywallers: How do in Install paper faced bullnose molding?

I'm remodeling and I'm getting ready to install the bullnose molding,

1. Do I mud then place paper face molding on mud and then mud on top like joint tape, or do I staple then mud having no mud underneath?

2. How do I cut the molding?

3. How do I put 2 molding pieces butted up together right?

4. I'm using those plastic corner pieces for the windows, do they just stick on with mud or do I nail them? does mud cover the seams from the straight molding to the plastic curved pieces?

Thanks!

Answers:
1. Mud first with paper molding.

2. You can cut it with just about any cutting device. Tin snips work well.

3. Put the two pieces end to end. Just make sure they line up well so you can minimize the amount of mud you have to use.

4. When using the plastic pieces for the windows, you should staple them or use small nails first. You can leave the plastic of the curved pieces exposed, as they can be painted. I would suggest covering everything else with mud.

Using paper faced bullnosing is a little difficult for the someone who does not install it on a regular basis. But if you are set on doing it yourself, then here is my recommendations.
The most important item you will be needing is a good 4 foot level if you are doing corner bead on walls, and a good 2 foot level if you are doing window sills. For corners on walls, measure your corner wall from top to bottom. Subtract one quarter inch from your measured length and cut your corner bead to that size. Then take a 4 inch putty knife and apply your joint compound or mud directly along outside corner or your wall from top to bottom. You don't need to use very much. Then with level in 4 foot level in hand, place your corner bead on the corner and hold it in place. Then take your 4 foot level and make sure that you are plumb or level. After you have made your adjustments and are plumb or level, gently take your thumb and index finger and press lightly on the paper on both sides of sides of the corner bead on the middle, then the top and then the bottom. Double check with your level once again to be sure that you are plumb or level. Once you are level or plumb then take you 4 inch putty knife and run it gently along the entire edge on both sides. You do not need to use a lot of pressure. Just be sure that you paper does not stick out pat the end of your corner bead. Be careful not to move the position of your corner bead. Doing windows is almost the same. On windows you also need to use a good level. First, put a little mud behind each or your corner pieces and place then in their respective corners. Make them as even and straight as you can. Then cut you lenghts of corner bead for all 4 sides. Cut them a little about an inch longer than what you need. Starting from the top, put a little mud on both sides of the corner lilke you would if you were doing a regular wall corner. Then place your top length on to where you think that it looks level. Just apply enough pressure to hold it in place. Then with your level, check to see if your are level or not. If your lenght is a little long, just let it ride on top of the plastic corner piece for now. Then do the left side of your window using the same technique as the top. Check to see if are plumb. Once again, if your corner lenght is a little long, let it ride over the plastic corner piece for now. Then set your right side and then the bottom. What you are trying to do is to set your 4 corners properly. You will need to make a lot of little adjustments to make it come out right. Once your 4 corners are set, then starting with the top length, mark your top length with a pencil so that you lenght fits exactly between the two corners. Repeat this step for all 4 sides of your window. When you are happy with the way it looks and are plumb and square, then as did for the wall corner, gently push the paper in towards the wall, making sure that you are not sticking out past the edge of your corner bead. Then leave it alone for one day and let it dry. On the next day, scrape off any excess with a 4 inch putty knife and put on the second coat. A few hours later, you can install the third and final coat. Your first window will take forever. But, you will become more familiar with the process and do the other windows a lot faster. You will find it a little frustrating. But with determination, you can do it.
