Make a small room look bigger by doing the walls in a light colour and then you can brighten it up with cushions, bedspread and accesseries. It is difficult without seeing the room and your likes etc. You would have to agree on what you both like and compromise.Try and get some unusual things you both like to make it less boring.
The best way to change the look of a room is to paint it. I am guessing that your walls are white right now. Figure out between your significant other and yourself which color you would like.
