The one thing my grandpa always said is
Pay a little more than you can afford to, to make sure that you get the best quality you possibly can.
I live by this with furniture and home decor. You get the quality that you pay for, and if you want it to last and be around for a long time, you will need to make an investment.
If you just want something to get you through a year or so, till you can actually afford nice furniture, then you have to do what you have to do.

I have an entertainment stand and a table and chair set from walmart. I bought them about 2 years ago and they are holding up well.
As long as you don't plan on using it for any length of time and don't have small children it will be fine. But no many pieces are not that great. If they have a display look at it carefully because some peices are better than others.
I frequently shop at Wal Mart...frequently being somewhat of an understatement. I guess when seekng to buy furniture, I'd say you probably get what you pay for. You gotta take into consideration it's Wal Mart. Now mind you, I'm not saying a $6000 couch is really much better than a $2500 couch, but........
I have a Sauder dresser from there, or something comparable...bottoms of the drawers fall out all the time. Got a futon sofa...it was nice for a while, but the cushion was fairly thin, and eventually you felt all the bars of the futon frame up your rear when you sat down. Guess it's your choice. I have no problem if I don't have the funds and need something like a dresser or a shelf.
