Is there any way to kill mold and mildew other than bleach or replacing the wood??

A friends bathtub has been leaking for sometime.Under it and behind the wall, mold has started growing and causing quite an odor. She doesn't have the money to replace all the wood. Can it be treated with anything.Bleach didn't work.Still the odor lingers

Answers:
DampRid makes a mold and mildew remover and protectorant. They also make a moisture collector that has odor control. It is a plastic tub filled with granules that catch the moisture from the air and neutralizes odor. I got mine at Lowes in the cleaning aisle. The moisture collector takes time, so you might advise her to spray Ozium which is great at instantly removing odors and leaves a fresh lemon scent. It sounds like not all of the mold spores were killed and it is continuing to grow.

If bleach didn't work...then the problem is very serious...sounds like wood rot too....it has to be replaced...the mold and meldew will make your friend very sick all the time

The real problem is what you can't see. That is where the water is that if feeding the mold. Even if the leaks are stopped, it could take a very long time before anything drys out. IF she can't afford correct repair, than at least tear down whatever is there and let it dry out! Then you can use your 10% BLEACH MIST to kill it off.
Besides, if it isn't dryed out soon, her problems will be much worse than just mold.
if i were you i would cut into the wall from the other side of the bath then spray it with chlorine let it dry out fix the leaking tub so there is no more leaks then patch the wall back up. if you don't want to replace the tub that the next cheapest thing.
Bleach it not effective for killing mold. according to all mold remediation standards and or guidelines the only way to remove mold from wood is to sand or scrape the wood down until the mold affected area is removed completely, depending on the extent of the damage the type of wood and the size of the piece of wood it might have to be replaced. after the mold is gone it can me sprayed with a bioside or antimicrobial agents to prevent further growth, biosides are effective killing mold and antimicrobial agents are effective on preventing or retarding growth. bacteria can also grow on wet wood. so be care full. mold and or bacteria could be harmful to peoples health.
only a professional should do this kind of job. at a minimum an N95 respirator should be used to do this job but i strongly suggest that you call a professional.
