I have a small ish front room and want to redecorate without making the place look small?

Try HGTV (www.hgtv.com)....they always have really great before & after room make-over slides and tips!
Also, be sure not to furnish the room w/ oversized pieces, like that ultra- comfy chair...paint the room a cool color to expand the room and of course use glass end tables, coffee tables, etc. as well as mirrors..these are great accessories to make a small room feel/ appera larger!

A Mirror can help but don't over due it, put it at the end of 1 wall but not too close to the window. lighter color on the ceiling than the walls can make the room feel taller, Painting walls light colors
moves them out dark colors makes them feel closer. small Track lighting or spot lighting pointing at the walls from the center moves them apart. No low hung ceiling lamps or ceiling fans.
leave some wall and floor space even if it means getting smaller furniture.
use mirrors as they can make a room look bigger.
I've just replastered my bedroom, and had it painted magnolia,as paint goes into new plaster, cannot believe how much bigger the room now looks, along with the light maple bedroom furniture, have added loads of cushions with different textures to make the room feel cosy and a dimmer switch to the main light for varying moods. Suggest you go for a light colour too, then co-ordinate your carpet, cushions and furniture so the colours all work together. Mirrors and good lighting are also important, and I would maybe put 2 2 seater sofas, if there is room rather than 1 large sofa and a chair. Not sure about websites, magazine are good source, can always flick through them before buying just to seeif there are any ideas in them that you like, local library might stock some diy and room make over books too.
hope it turns out ok
Make everything look symmetrical:
1)Matching candlesticks versus one candle
2) Two coordinating chairs, versus one couch.
3)Coordinated arrangement of prints/photos on the wall. Also if you have a window, consider opening up the window to the outside. It will look like the room continues through the window.
A cluttered room looks crowded, regardless of the size of the room. So not too many knickknacks or collection stuff. When things are lined up and matching, the room will open out better. U
