What is the best paint to buy to cover dark paint? I want to change a wall from dark red to cream.?

Buy a top-quality brand name paint from a paint store, not a department store - Duron, Sherwin-Williams, that sort of thing. Stay away from bargain paints or low-end paints; buy the best they have in the store. If there are no paint stores near you, try Behr from Home Depot.
No matter what you buy, you will probably need at least two and possibly three coats to fully cover a dark color with a light color. Priming the wall first will help, and it will be even better if you can get the paint store to put some white pigment in the primer for you. Use good quality brushes and rollers - Purdy makes good ones. And don't skimp on the paint when you're applying it. Trying to stretch the paint will only doom you to recoat. Get that roller as full of paint as you can without dripping on the way to the wall.
Work in 3'-4' square sections; make a big W with the roller, then roll it out side to side, then top to bottom to spread the paint out evenly over that section. Do a high section, then a low section, then (if you're using a paint with a sheen) roll it out from ceiling to floor while both sections are still wet, to even out the roller marks and produce an even finish.
edit: I disagree with the advice many have given to use two coats of primer and one coat of paint. One coat of primer and two paint coats will cover better, because paint has more pigment in it than primer; and your final finish will look deeper and richer if you do two coats of paint. It will take longer and cost more (because paint is more expensive than primer and dries slower) but it will look better when you are done.

Not sure about which type of paint would work best for you, but I definitely would use a coat of primer.
Use a primer and a good quality high hiding paint.

Use a white or eggshell colored primer (way cheaper than paint). Put on one to two coats, let dry, then paint your cream color.

Make sure you get an interior latex primer. And as always, make sure that each coat is dry prior to adding each succesive coat.
Kilz paint. Use the low odor version it works just as good as the smelly one.
Your best bet is to invest in an undercoat - Homebase's own is good.
Paint this on, and you can then put any colour you like on the walls.
I'd buy a cheaper white emulsion from Homebase or B & Q, give it a couple of coats, & then paint the colour you'd prefer.

Any color is technically "coverable", it just may take more coats than if you were covering a light color. Get a good light-colored primer, then top with two coats of the cream paint. (let dry in between coats).
Killz is the best concealer i've found. It might take a couple coats but if you buy a cheap primer you'll paint about 5 coats before you can even think to use your colored paint.

I agree that one coat of primer and two paint coats will cover better than two primer and one coat of paint. Use Sherwin-Williams ProBlock Latex primer, and leave it white. Topcoat with Sherwin-Williams Superpaint Interior Latex paint in a Flat or Satin finish tinted to your cream color.
White kiltz primer it seals in old stains.
I suggest you cover it with a very plain wallpaper, and then paint over the wallpaper
Karen & cat seem to be the nearest Use OILBOUND pale grey undercoat to blank out the dark colour, when dry use normal emulsion or Dulux onecoat.
Just the 'One Coat' paints they cover dark colours you might need two coats if its very dark
You are going to have to undercoat the wall first. I can't think of the name of it but there is an undercoating product that can be painted on to cover up walls that have been graffitied with Texta and the like. It does not allow the color to bleed through the finished paint job. If you go to a professional paint shop they sould know what it is. This should also stop the dark paint from bleeding through your cream paint.
I've used this product, it works well, you only need one coat and then you paint your two cream coloured coats over it.
