How do you set a table with a runner? Can you use placemats with it or do you have to use chargers?

Can the runner go under the placemats? Does anyone have a photo? I have a 64" square table that seats 8, 2 on each side and I don't want the placemats to run into each other. I have round placemats right now but they're a little small.

Answers:
I have found that setting a table with a runner does have its challenges. However, if the host or hostess has any sense at all, they will tie the runners shoelaces together at the beginning of the meal before he has a chance to get away - at least until grace has been said.

I would not put placemats, round or square, directly on top the the runner because even if shoelaces are tied, the runner usually flails around and would disturb any arrangement posited. Of course a charger is just as bad if not worse.

I hope this helps hon. Bon Apetit!

I think it would look better with out the place mats amd just use the chargers.... If you are going to use the place mats, take away the runner. IMO
