What type of carpet wears the best and what is a good price to expect?

I am purchasing carpet for my entire house and was just looking for some opinions as to what type of material wears the best. I'm looking for expert info and also personal experiences. Also what would be a reasonable price to pay?

Answers:
Nylon wears best, and with the newest of the nylons being softer, Tactess, Caress these feel really good on your feet. Nylon also cleans well. Most nylons will come with some sort of built in stain resistant, such as Stainmaster, R2X (Shaw Industries branded stain resistant formula), 3M StainRelease. Be sure your carpet has more than just Scotchguard. Scotchguard is only a topical spray that will come off when the carpet has it's first cleaning. Don't confuse Scotchguard with Scotchguard StainRelease. StainRelease is good as it is a built in product. Nylons will start about $12.00 yd. (builder's grade, not what you will want)

Polyester is inferior to nylon, it cleans well, holds its color well, but doesn't wear as well as nylon. Starting Price around $10 yard.

Olefin is a very hardy fiber, however it doesn't wear as well as nylon. It has a lower melt point than nylon, which means if you build up enough friction, your fibers can become fused, not a great look. This is most prevelant to happen on a staircase. Olefin is difficult to stain. Olefins can start at about $8.00 yd

Wool is a great wearing fiber, it is very expensive, and does not have the properties of the nylon. Wool can be allergenic to some, so if someone in your household has allergies, might rethink this. Wools will start about $40. yard

As far as construction goes, saxony's are those cut pile velvety carpets that show every foot print. There are textured saxony's that have a higher degree of twist to the fiber, sometimes referred to as trackless carpets. And it means just that they track less, show less footprinting, it does not mean they will not show any tracks. Popular carpets such as berber have a loop construction, and are made closer to the way most commercial carpet is made. Sisal is also a good wearer however it is bad for water spotting.

Look for a carpet that has what is known as sofbac backing. That will help insure you don't get any wrinkles for 10 years or so.

Pads, lets not forget pads. If you are doing the whole house you will surely want to get a good pad. A pad that is at least 6lb density is required to make certain you don't violate the warranty on your carpet. You can expect to pay a starting price of about $2.50 yard for pad. 8lb pad will cost about $3.50 yd., and you can go up in pad cost to the cadillac of pads costing about $9.00 yard. This pad is like those high end mattresses that have a memory foam as the base. You can get pet resistant pads which means if your pet goes on your carpet the pad will resist absorbing the liquid allowing you to clean it from the carpet.

As far as pricing goes, you can would expect to pay somewhere around $28 per yard and up. You can get a great construction and quality for around $35.00 per square yard.

Many carpet companies offer free quotes. I would find the carpet I like, and make sure that I have at least a couple of quotes, also know the type of work the carpet company does. Check your local Angieslist.com for recommendations.

Persian or Turkish (Aegean) hand-woven carpets are very popular. Be sure to expect a price between 1.000$ - 10.000$ each, of course according to their size and uniqueness. Please consult a professional or an ethusiast before you go shopping or else you can be ripped of big time.
frieze, berber and sisal all wear like iron and loog good...expect to pay anywhere from 30 to 60 sq. yard , anything cheaper wont last.
