how can I paint on brass so it doesnt chip off?
Answers:
Hi,
Sand it first, spray with primer for cars, then spray car paint, color of choice, in about 3 thin coats. Spray cans only, do not brush. Brushing makes coat too thick.
Good Luck

I found some paint in JoAnn Fabrics (okay my wife did) that we painted brass with, just called metallic paint. The color we used was brushed nickel, but they are bound to have other colors.

Get some coarse steel wool and go over the brass to slightly roughen the surface. Then get a good metal primer like Rust-Oleum. After it dries apply whatever color you want.
They make spray paint meant specifically for spraying different metals (you have to sand it first). I used it in a bronze color to spray my brass fireplace cover and it worked great. However, I don't think this kind of paint is meant for anything that gets a lot of contact. Any kind of paint you use is going to chip and scrape eventually unless it is left untouched.
Just buy a new lock if you can...they are pretty cheap. I use to work for a door and hardware shop and you can probably pick one up at Home depot or Lowes for under $20. They are pretty easy to install yourself. Just make sure you bring the old lock with you to the store and get help matching it up.
Good luck!
