My first thought was "what does 'homegrown experience' mean to me?"
When I think of homegrown, I think about how I grew up in a tiny farming community. Everyone was real, no one put on airs, and you could trust that a stranger will help you change a tire.
I think of folk art. Tables made from old doors and windows. Bird houses from barn wood. Dented up wash tubs full of sewing stuff. Red plaid curtains. You know, grandma's farm crafts and grandpa's ingenuity. Maybe the ladies at your shelter could make some "homegrown" crafts?
I think of food. Like corn bread, fresh snap peas, warm cookies and pies displayed on doilies. Maybe some "cookies in a jar" where you just add egg and butter to the dry mix in the jar, or better yet, cornbread where you just add water and spread in a pan. Possibly some local farmers can donate some fresh goods?
I think of community- the way everyone would come together for the 4th of July or a barn-raising. The way all handshakes were firm, and everyone looked you in the eyes. I think of senior centers and elementary schools. I think of non-crooked politicians kissing babies. I think love.
Best of luck and thank you for providing a place where the battered can go, and trust that you will help. It means alot to me.

use stuff like flowers in a terra cotta pot or make a little garden.....or tomatoes growing in a container....cause all that stuff is homegrown!
how about vines, but with things like socks, and baby shoes and hairbrishes etc hanging off it
Put it into a style of a fist.
If it is mostly adults visiting, put up some pictures of battered women and children. That will draw a picture of the community u r serving. If that is too extreme, how about just happy families together and the phrase "how i wish" or something.
picture of people from your city, picture of mom and child by the way keep up the good work, fire dept police dept baseball team football team thy can be drawing
Okay, so how about a "garden theme" where you show how with the right tools and care, children can grow into beautiful healthy adults. Like have a poster where the watercan pours out love on a smiling baby, etc. Decorate with real gardening props and handle out information on how domestic violence hurts women and children. Yes, I know it's horribly corny, but it's all I can think of. Maybe sell seed packets to be planted in the Fall and have the profits go to your shelter?
you want something comfortable and warm.. i would use warm colours like muted oranges and yellows
pans pens
Some good ideas so far. A variety of plants/flowers, pictures of smiling women, women with children, and a phrase such as "Harvest of Hope" could be displayed. Maybe a dog or cat too. People in trouble will sometimes find it easier to connect with furries, than approach a stranger. Dogs and cats are great ice breakers.
