What is the best type of fabric to use on a lamp shade?

Something treated for heat resistance. Keep away from sheer man-made fabrics like nylon or Orlon as they tend to not hold up well and the heat can distort them.
Cotton, either canvas or lighter fabrics work well.

I use canvas since it is a durable fabric and easy to decorate.
I would pick something sturdy that I could rinse off if it got dusty. Velvet is asking for cobwebs and ick.
A silky brocade would be pretty . just a hint , if you use fray check all around the edge of fabric pieces as soon as you cut them out they wont fray as you work with them.. good luck its not an easy task.
