Oil and colored water is mixed in a closed glass container.
A heat source is placed at the bottom to cause a current through the container.
A simple one may be built by placing a light bulb in a foild covered box to generate the heat.
An inverted mayonaise jar filled with the solution can by placed on top with the metal exposed to the heat.

Now that you understand the principle and experiment with it you can build a fancier one.
Actual lava is so hot that even if you didn't kill yourself making or getting it, it would melt the glass you tried to put it in...then it would burn through your carpet or other floor covering, and through the floor if it is wood, and any other flooring/ceiling it came in contact with. You would probably get a fire that would burn your place down.

Not something I would try...
An actual lava lamp? Good luck; since lava is actually molten rock, I find it hard to believe that you will find anything to contain it that you could see through, let alone heat it to the temperature needed.
