Any painting tips for a first timer?

Hello! I am going to paint my apartment this weekend, and will be my first time in painting. I've been thinking of purchasing the Wagner XTRA Quicktouch Power Roller Pro system. Kind of expensive, but whenever I move into my house (hopefully next year) it will come in handy then as well. My question is, any hints on painting so I don't have to buy the system, or have any of you out there used this particular system, and do you recommend it? Does it get paint on your carpet? That is the main thing i'm worried about. Thanks!

don't bother with the power painter,it's a large waste of money.
most people have the biggest problems when it comes to "cutting in" straight lines from the wall to ceiling.
here's what i reccomend.
go to sherwin williams.
buy a 3" "Box " brush.(SherTip)
buy your paint.
if painting smooth walls,use a 1/2 " nap roller.
(flat paint is easier to work with & costs less money)
buy a 5gal. bucket & a screen.
use a decent roller frame.
cover your floors & anything else with a drop cloth or old blankets or plastic.
pour the paint into the bucket.
leave about 1 inch of paint in the bottom of the can.
with the can you dip your brush in 1/3 of the way.
then you pull the excess paint off of 1 side of the can(you now only have paint on one of the brush.that's the side that you put up against what you DO NOT want paint on.)
the slower you move your hand the worse it will look.
make an even pass on the surface, for about 3 feet.
dip the brush back into the can & repeat.
when rolling the surface, put paint on the roller.
roll excess off onto screen.
start in the middle of the surface then go up then down.
you get the best results if you make 1 pass from top to bottm.
move over about 3 feet.
repeat process working your way back into what you just painted.

(all the lingo will be understood by the paint store ex; box brush screen etc....)
practice makes perfect
ps; don't bother washing the walls.you're gonna paint them, remember.??!?
it's a waste of time & money

let me know if you need more help.

First off get the following items from your local home improvement store:

TSP (trisodium phosphate) for washing walls,
A bucket
Paint rollers (Just get the value set comes with the tray, etc..)
Tray liners,
blue tape (2" wide),
cheap 1mil plastic sheeting,
1-2 paint brushes for doing detail work in corners,
Trim guide (makes painting corners easy),
Extention pole if you dont have a stool to get next to the ceiling.

Buying all that fancy shmancy junk, Wagner model XYZ, is if you plan on changing your paint often, or plan on doing lots of painting. My wife and I have painted our house and it costs us about $50 - $60 per room.

We just bought a new house and before we move in, were painting every room, It'll cost us about $500. To have it done professionally would cost us almost 10 times as much.

Have fun and good luck!
They sell cheap dropcloths at walmart or Lowes . Just tape off tough areas to paint . I put a small garbage bag over paint pan as a liner for paint, turn insideout to also store wet roller , just twist tie at breaktme. Brushes can go full of wet paint right into a baggie to keep ready for next day , no wasted paint to clean up
Another trick is to take a hammer and nail and punch 5 holes in the groove of the paint can as soon as you open it, this gives the paint a way to drain back into the can, instead of over the side.I wouldn't buy that paint system unless you are going into business.
