Does anybody know if you need formal qualifications to trade as an interior designer, if so what are they?

Answers:
You do if you want to have clients. In the state of CA, you must register with the State Board of Equalization, must have a business license and be certified by either the ASID or other recognized industry organization. Of course, you can also have a degree in interior design, architecture, fine arts or a related field. You must also be bonded and insured. If you don't you will find it difficult to work with the trades because they do not want to stake their reputations on unqualified people. Most of the trades don't want the potential liability issues, either. Finally, you will find it difficult to attract clients. It really helps to list those formal certifications or degrees on your business card because it gives you credibility.

You do not need any formal qualifications but a diploma or similar from your local college would help. The best way is to design a few interiors for friends or relatives and then take pics of the before and after, thus, building yourself a "portfolio". Then it is just hard graft to get to be known in the area..

Yes you do...and they are not as easy as you may think it is.
Being a good Interior Designer takes many angles...color, design, structure, building knowledge, costing, marketing, tax, pricing, etc etc.
Its like someone thinking a pretty face makes one a model...believe me, models work hard to learn all they know . Same with Interior Design..its about 5 years at a College or University.
Just having a good sense of design is just one aspect..
I did a search for Courses for you..you can see what they offer you..
practice really hard at saying "o.k. yah" through your nose, and every third word say "absolutely", then put an add in the local paper, hope that helps.
The true answer is yes if you mean designing. Designing means knowing about moving walls and structural details and an education is essential. If you mean decorating the answer is no. But it certainly helps to get the education. The most important part of interior decorating is having a good sense of balance and an eye for detail. You will need lots of experience and a good portfolio to get the good paying jobs. You can start by working as a decorator in a retail store and build your reputation from there.
Yes you do. Interior designing id different from interior decorating. It is more technical in the sense that, it can be likened to architecture since it involves the sciences of heating, airconditioning and ventilation, electrical design, fire protection, sanitary design, acoustic design and structural design.

The scope goes beyond the design of homes. It considers specific things in a design, such as the amount of human traffic at a given time inside a mall, or the number of toilets in a country club.

You need 4 years of college to be an interior designer. There is also a state board examination that you need to pass in order to be a licensed interior designer.
