What should the theme of my room be?

I am decorating my room and can't decide the theme. Should it be tropical, retro.etc. I want it to be out of the ordinary, something amazing. I don't want it to be a room with a bed and a desk.

Answers:
You should have a pirate theme! Nobody has a room with a pirate theme. You can use old furniture too, and use chests to store your clothing and stuff. And incorporate some tropical things to give it the proper feel.

Your bedroom theme should reflect aspects of your personality. What do you like? Do you want your room to be more laid back or more stylish?
Base the theme on a collection that you may have, say of old books, or hats, dolls. Pick your favorite color and incorporate it into the theme. Cardinal rule of decorating is have one thing in black in every room in the house. It can be something small, a sconce, a candle holder, a picture frame but one item should be black. I don't know why but it was in every course I took in interior design. Don't go too wild with the amazing. People tend to tire of outrageous quickly. Classic can still be amazing.
what about making it like a Bedouin tent, instead of a bed you have all the cushions on the floor, instead of wallpaper, hang fabric from the center of ceiling an drape to edges of the room, lots of organza an satin, Indian sari material is great, rich reds, golds oranges dark purple etc. all easy to remove if you get sick of it.
To get some ideas you can go to the library and have the reference librarian point you to the section on home decorating.

Check out as many of the books that have great photos (usually in the oversized section). As you brouse through the photos see which ideas might work in your room. Then you can mix and match.

You mention that you don't want the traditional bed and desk. Have you thought about a sort of Japanese zen theme? With tatami mats and futons. If you have a light on your celing you can buy one of those Japanese paper umbrellas from an import store, cut the handle shorter, then hang it upside down from the celing as a shade for the light.

Well, you are going to have a lot of fun with your project.
Try a loft, easy to build where bed is close to celing with uderneath a space for your compter and clothes or seating. Lots of folks enjoy lofts in their college dorm rooms. It's really neat!
