Do-it-yourself carpet tiles are expensive, so how do they look and perform after installation?
Answers:
I bought some at Home Depot, were easy to install, and look great. So far after 2 years they are holding up great. Just think if you get a stain or something you can replace that tile !
Other answers:
I didn't buy the "snap" together ones that Home Depot sells, but I did buy some glue down carpet tiles. They are fantastic. I paid $97 to carpet my sons 8 by 10 bedroom in a berber. That carpet has performed much better than the broadloom StainMaster that Home Depot installed a month later. The supposed StainMaster carpet stains easily and after calling their 800 number, I was told that to get any warranty, we would have to pay $200 an hour to have the carpet cleaned by one of their "professionals" if that person deemed the carpet stain is a result of bad carpeting and not lack of owner care then they would replace the carpet.

First of all certainly it depends on the traffic over the area. Second you state less money for broadloom. It seems to me the better way to go.
Assume this:
You purchase enough to do the area in question. You are even wise enough to purchase extra, understanding the nature of the business and that everything changes.
The carpet tiles are less durable, no matter where they are placed, and possibly the replacement uses up what extra you bought, but yikes,,, there is that section over there, very visible, very used, very much an issue, in that you no longer have any extra to use in replacement.
I advise reg carpet,,, and/or tile or hardwood, depending especially on the traffic, and your personal preferences. Maintenance is no less or more an issue no matter what you walk on.
