How do I wallpaper a room with a cove ceiling? Going around the corners specificly.?

You are lucky to have a cove ceiling. I assume that you want to paper the walls of the room and not the ceiling. Papering the cove area will usually detract from the architectural detail it provides. The problem is where and how to stop the wallpaper as it approaches the curve of the cove.

The main idea is to stop the wallpaper at some point just below the point where the cove begins its' curve to the ceiling. There are many options depending in the height of the ceiling, size of the room, and your decorating budget.

Your wallpaper could be finished off at the top with a wallpaper border running horizontally around the room. I would not use a wide border since it will compete with the cove for your eyes' attention. Something like a 2" border should be sufficient. If the room is extremely large and/or the ceilings are nine or ten feet high, you would be safe using a wider border in keeping with the scale of the room. This option is probably your least expensive option.

Another idea would be to use some sort of moulding as a terminus for the wallpaper. Follow the same sort of ideas toward scale as were presented for a paper border. Some sort of panel moulding around the perimeter would add a lot of eye appeal and actually enhance the look of the coved ceiling. Your local home center or lumber company will offer you many moulding styles from which to choose. Depending on the moulding you choose, this option won't be much more expensive than a wallpaper border.

The play of light in a coved ceiling is what lends a dramaitc effect to this architectural detail. Again, the size of the room, height of the ceiling, and size of the cove will determine the size of the moulding used for this last option. An "open top" crown moulding around the perimeter of the room will provide a stopping point for your wallpaper. It will also offer you the opportunity to hide low voltage indirect lighting in the open crown moulding. Rope type lighting will provide an even source of light around the perimeter of the room. This hidden lighting will greatly enhance the look of the coved ceiling and the effect can be stunning. While this is the most expensive option, the expense may well be worth it.

I hope this information helps. Good luck with your project.

The wallpaper should stop immediately below the cove.Strongly suggest you don't even attempt to paper the ceiling yourself -it really is worth getting a professional for this job. Good luck
