what are typical elements of design in a japanese interior design for a middle class home?

I tried to do the very same thing and it turned out looking awful. Here is what I did wrong. I went out and bought a bunch of Japanese art and other japanese decorations and it just looked horrible. When doing some more research I found Japanese people dont have a lot of clutter. So you have to be simple and place things around in moderation. Dont paint your walls red and your furniture black!! Thats Chinese. I also made that mistake. Japanese tradtional style is bamboo mats..paired with low furniture. Like futons and low tables. Paint colors are very light in color and wood colors are typically light also. Sougi screens are good. Paper lanterns are great too. Places like target sell paper lantern lamps for around $10.00. Small fountains, or even a candle garden would work well. Flower decor would be good too. Like real or faux orchid plants. And lucky bamboo plants are very easy to care for. Also cherry blossoms are Japanese and most craft stores sell beautiful faux cherry blossom braches for flower arrangments. My art in my room wasnt the problem. I found some very nice and cheep Japanese prints from www.art.com I think in total for 3 large pictures and 2 smaller ones I payed about $75.00 in all. That is without frames of course. Frames are cheaper at places like Wal-mart. I hope some of these ideas help you.
