I want a short specification for a contractor who is going to decorate my home.?
Answers:
Make a list of everything you want done, and make sure you go over it with whom ever you hire, then after the work is done, go over the list and make sure everything is done.
Pretty straight forward.
Other answers:
don't forget a before and after photo, the digital is ideal for that job, in case he damages something, and then tries to claim it was like that before he started. if you have a pic of the area before he started, then it is some cover for you.
may seem petty, but if it happened it would seem very sensible indeed.

Firstly ensure all existing carpets floor coverings protected
Prepare surfaces with wash of sugar soap to degrease surface
prepare existing surface filling cracks where neccessary
sand smooth existing surfaces ready for mist coat
fill all gaps with flexible decorators filler smooth off to fine finish
spot prime and knot solution to any woodwork if applicable
Undercoat all woodwork if applicable
Mask off where neccessary
1 x mist coat to all sound surfaces (fist coat generally sealer coat)
2x finish coat matt emulsion to ceilings
2x finish coat silk or soft sheen emulsion to walls
reason i prefer silk or soft sheen on walls that it is wipeable
make sure yougt two estimates and make sure they are quoting like for like including same brand of paint etc
personally i would only use the trade paints from the decorators centres as they are much better quality than the usual brands
hope this helps
