Answers: The rise and run of steps are measured by measuring the tread and riser of respectively step. This will give you the linear foot of carpet that you entail to cover the steps. The direction of the doze must run down the steps. You do not want the carpet to grin.
If the total length of the steps and risers is 15' and the span is 3' 4", the carpet needed will be 12' X 5'. That may not be accurate.
Risers and step are usually 1'6"-1'8".
I'm estimating a 12' X 5.0".
That is 6 2/3 sq. yard.
This will be stripped into 3 strips, each 4'.0 X 5'.0.
If 15' hearth rug is used, it may take a 15'.0 X 3'9", 6 2/3 sq. yds.
This will be stripped into 4 strips, respectively 3' 9" X 3'9".
Do not depend on this for accurate measurements. I'm not sure how accurate you are.
