How can I stop brown grades showing through my painted ceiling?

The plaster underneath it is in an ok condition but is reasonably old, and when I paint over the top of it brown stains show through. I've painted three or four coats so far. It's diminishing, but is there something I can do to release myself a lot of work (and a stiff d¨Ścolletage!).
