Very carefully!!
lift the carpet
Use masking tape to tape a dust sheet to your carpet
Your best bet is to use hard wearing masking tape and ensure it is tucked right into the edge of he carpet. There is not really many tools out there at the moment to help with this. Hope that helps. Take Care x
Masking tape is one way.
DIY stores sell plastic strips that you poke under the skirting board to protect the carpet.
A carpet fitter advised me to spilt plastic bags in half and poke those under the skirting board.
I'm so clumsy that whatever method I use I also need to have a supply of white spirit handy to clear up any mistakes !
well in honesty you would need to lift the carpet up to actually get all of the skirting. but if like me recently, due to lack of space this is inpractical, pull the carpet up at the edges, and wrap masking tape a dust sheet around the edge of the carpet, that way you can paint without covering the carpet in paint.
Thats got me thinking.. becareful not to drip any paint. Its always good to have old sheets protecting the carpet. But how about use a brickies trowel to hold the carpet down and create a gap between the skirting board and the carpet so the brickies trowel covers the carpet as you go.
I prefer using a thin sturdy piece of plastic. it needs to be flat on one side. use this as barrier in between the carpet and the board. You don't need to load you paint brush up with allot of paint. Excess will drip and that's not good for the carpet. hope this helps.
Painters tape would work. Some people take the molding off to paint it they have shag capeting. Then they put the molding back on.
I don't know if they are still available but you use to be able to get a plastic strip that looked like a venetian blink slat. You could insert it in the space between the baseboard and the carpet, press it down and thereby keep the carpet away from the wood while you painted it.
I have found that the tape just isn't good enough. I use a dust pan. you can fit it under the wood, it catches drips and washes clean.
first place a plastic drop sheet on the carpet then take the wide blue paint tape and put that on both the plastic and the carpet. press the carpet down so that it is below the baseboard and you should be fine. don't use a brush that is any wider than 2 1/2 inches.
They make pre-taped drop cloths that have a sturdy adhesive and are much easier than dealing with a sheet or getting the tape to stick to a piece of plastic and the base board or carpet. I have seen them at walmart in the paint supplies section.
