when coloring walls two different colors does darker color go on top?
Answers:
If you are going to simply paint two colors next to each other without putting a chair rail or break between the two the lighter color will work better on the top. The overall proportions of the room seem to be perceived as "off" when the top is much darker than the bottom. Dark colors always seem to have more "weight" and therefore logically we think they should go on the bottom.
If the bottom of the room has elements of interest such as wainscot, bead board, chair rail, etc. this will offset the issues mentioned above because they add the balance needed to put the darker color on top. The white on bottom is especially lovely if the bottom plus all of the trim details are white against the darker upper portion of the walls. In this case too you may consider a semi gloss or gloss paint for the lower half and trim and a flat for the purple above.
You may also want to consider using a very pale purple (almost white but with a look of lavender) rather than white for the upper portion if the woodwork is white so that the woodwork stands out rather than blends with the wall color. If the woodwork is natural/brown then stick to white because it would be a better choice.

it's totally up to you, but those two colors are pretty contrasting, my suggestion would be a darker purple and a lighter purple then can use white for accents & trim

I would put the lighter color on top
put the purple on the bottom because if u put the purple on the to it would b a very dark room so purple bottom whit top hope that helped
You could go either way with it. I personally like darker colors on the bottom and lighter on the top. I think it looks better.
It doesn't matter. Go with what you and your daughter like best. Personally I'd do the purple on the bottom with a chair rail between the two colors....
the white on top. but I would use the accent color where the white would have a hint of purple in it
we decorated our room similar colours and used the lighter colour on top. looks better if u ask me but up to u.
well i guess white goes down coz' lighter colours have an expanding effect while darker ones have a contracting effect. so if white's down n purple on top it will give tht 'gradually narrowing upward effect'. tho' i shld suggest tht u try using a light purple instead of 'standard' purple-gives better effect.eeks i advise way too much.
depends on where you are "splitting" it at--chair-rail height, eye level, etc. Eye-level or higher, the dark color on top will bring the ceiling down visually, whereas the the lighter color on top would open it up, or raise it, more visually. Chair-rail height, with the dark color on the bottom, might hide a messy room more though! Good luck!
its up to you it depends on your personal like and dis like me i prefer the dark color on the bottom but like i said its all upto you :) and have fun painting
If the top color is also going to be the ceiling color, then white on top. A purple ceiling would make it too dark and feel too small.
Hi, I'm a professional painter (Masterpiece Painting and Home Improvement, Philadelphia, PA), and I've been painting since I was a little boy...as of yet, I haven't seen two colors on a wall that look good when the darker color goes on top. Darker colors on top give the room a taller look, almost unnaturally, and by contrast, the light color on top makes the room look true to it's form. When painting two colors that vary dramatically in color, such as purple and white, that effect is multiplied because of the distance on the color spectrum.
If you still want the purple on top, you can reduce the effects of the above by having a larger area at the bottom reserved for the white. For example, if your chair rail or border is at 36" from the floor, move it up to 42" or higher to provide more area to paint with white. This will visually improve the height of the room and look a little more natural. Good luck, and let me know how it turns out.
Last year I painted our guest bedroom in Cape Cod. Bottom white, with a white chair rail, and the top is a deep colonial green. All the woodwork and the ceiling are white. Framed mirrors are white. The best is the white lace curtains - they just pop! on the green.
Needless to say, we have frequent guests "on Cape", and every single woman has just raved about the contrast of the deep color with the white. I was nervous about my initial decision, but now even my teenage daughter (who thought I was crazy when she saw the work in progress) approves!
Good luck, and enjoy! Remember, it's only paint - a coat of Binz, and you can switch them around if you hate it!
I would put a pale purple on top and dark on bottom and put a chair rail in a creamy white.
Depends...white on top would widen horizon, make connection to the sky, and make room feel larger. Darker color on bottom will make decors stands out better. But...if you simple refuse to go along with the 'norm' and want something out of box for your daughter, go ahead - put purple on top and white on the bottom!
