I am allergic to latex, Can I paint with latex paint. Is that the same. Would it bother me if I got it on me?

hiya momof4..

if the only thing you're allergic to is latex, then exposure to latex paints should have no affect on you. contrary to popular belief, there is no latex in latex paint and to my knowledge never has been. the type of latex most people are allergic to is the resin from rubber plants and other similar plants - the resins in latex paints (acrylic, vinyl, acetate, styrediene, etc.) are primarily petro-chemical derivatives and are more closely related to plastics than rubber. the reason latex paint is called latex is because the dried paint film, when viewed under great magnification, is micro-porous (breathable) and has the appearance of lattice work..."latex paint" was determined to be a more market acceptable term than "lattice paint" ...(true story - we in the paint industry will never be accused of being overly creative...)

now, having said this, some people may have an allergic reaction to latex, or other types of paint. you/they may have be allergic to the resins, pigments, solvents or additives found in paint (completely un-related to the latex allergy you already have)...obviously the best person to determine how a paint product may affect you is your family doctor or allergist, but if your only allergy is to natural latex, then "latex" paint should not bother you.

i hope this info is helpful...good luck

It will irritate your skin if you get it on you. Might use latex-free gloves to paint

NONONONO I broke out in a terrible rash after being in a building that used this and the rash actually spread to my throat. I had to take steroids to get it to calm down
Fumes will get you!

I am an artist and a girl in my class is allergic to latex. If she touches, bad news.
However, even if she smells latex fumes she will have an allergic reaction.

So you might want to stay away from it.
Yes, latex paint is still latex--it will bother to have it on you.

Might want to get it checked out by a doctor...she has had some major episodes from fumes.

be careful!
Allso see if there is an aditive that can be put in the paint to stop any reactions u might have, im not sure if there is one but if there is home depot or lowes would definetly have it.
Good luck in your painting venture

I suspect it depends in part on your level of sensitivity to latex. If you are highly allergic, don't risk it.

I've heard that if someone has a mild reaction to latex condoms, that they won't necessarily have a negative reaction to casual contact with latex, it's just that the friction caused with that particular usage can increase the reaction.

When it's all said and done though, if you are concerned about using latex paint, I'd recommend not using it.
be really careful i had a friend that was allergic to latex and she had some sunglasses that had latex in them and it touched the sides of her face the arms of the glasses and she swelled up while driving and started itching and luckily we were pretty close to the hospital because it could of killed her i wouldnt even take a chance my dear do another paint or have someone else do it
Most paints aren't latex any more. If you read the label on the paint cans it tells if it is latex based or not. Also Sherwin Williams paint is a good paint to use if you are allergic.

Once you have painted with paint and the fumes are a problem give it a week before you go back into the room by then you should be able to tolerate the paint.

There is good information on the labels of paint and there are 800 numbers to call if you need more answers.
Sherwin Williams bought out nearly ever paint company in the U.S.A. they just never changed the label over 5 years ago. Latex paint is mainly made of ammonia which is a colorless gas with nitrogen and hydrogen materials. The only thing possible for you to do unless you want to dress like the people who work for the environment chemical pick up people is to hire a painter.*
You o. k. not smelly not irritate.much water based, you can open can of paint smell or expose tiny drip to test, not harm-full.
