help- is my decorator just about to ruin my livingroom???

hi I was just saying to the decorator that i have been nervous to get the room wallpapered as the paper is expensive and i was worried it would get mucked up ( this was my way of saying to him "do a good job") and he then covered his back by saying.."well some papers look great when they first go on and then when they dry they open along the joins ( gaps in the seams) but that is certain types of paper so it wouldn't be my fault, you'd have to get intouch with the manufacturers"
I said "oh now i really AM nervous"
Do you think maybe he is just quite bad and is covering his back or do you think he is genuine...
Trouble is ..i won't have the guts to tell him to just forget about doing it...he is painting the ceiling at the moment and hasn't started with the paper..
oh keep your fingers crossed for me!
what do you think?

I think "knowitall" has a great answer because it touches on what others have said AND it offers a great way to deal with your issue:

First, most decorators I know of will do stuff personally IF they excel at it or have been doing it for a long time (like painting, wallpapering, upholstering). Any decorator who is worth their merit, however, will admit when they DON'T know what they're doing and hire a sub-contractor to come in and do the job properly. It will end up raising their fee (to cover the cost of the sub-con), but you will be sure to get a quality job done in the end.

If the paper IS high quality and is applied with the appropriate adhesive (which would be specified by the manufacturer... whom YOUR DECORATOR should call and talk to, not you), then there is no reason that the paper should start coming apart at the seams as soon as it's dry.

One thing: I will make allowance for your decorator putting the responsibility back on you IF, and only IF, YOU were the one who had picked out the paper before you even hired him to do the job. BUT, if this paper is one of the wall coverings that HE suggested, and you chose it because of his suggestion... then HE needs to do the footwork and research necessary to ensure proper installation. That's what you're PAYING him for.

Like "knowitall" said... if he can't offer you some sort of happy compromise (like, if it DOES peel, I'll be happy to remove it and just paint your walls in a color of your choice free of charge), get someone else. Don't allow sentimentality slip in where a business deal is involved. This is your hard-earned money that you are spending to improve an expensive asset: your home. It is perfectly reasonable for you to expect the job to be done well.

Good luck.

noooooo, its his job to make sure it doesnt go wrong.u have insurance i take it? Hes talking crap babe.
Call the manufacturers of the wallpaper.
I'm going to be up all night worrying about it.Fu*cking do it yourself!
DON'T let him do your wallpaper. His alibi is BS...if he knows what he is doing the seams will be fine. Have him stop after the ceiling (make up an excuse if you have to) and assess what he's done. Then get another estimate for the wallpaper.
Compliment him, by saying, "well, I know that a decorator as experienced as yourself will be able to deal with a problem like that and make a damn good job of it too"! It always works for men! Flattery, (even though you dont mean it!)works every time! LOL

Seriously, check out the manufacturers website, and see if there are any FAQ's about this problem. Trawl the net to see if theres anything.
Wallpaper is old fashioned in my book, just paint the walls in a textured way. Sounds like he is covering his back. Tell him you have changed your mind (find the guts somehow), this will give you time to think about hiring someone else, or maybe selling the wallpaper and just painting the walls.
You are paying for a quality job. He should already know what wallpaper to not use. Imagine that! A wallpaper that doesn't stay together at the seams. Do you think that a manufacturer is going to make a product that does this? If they do make a product that was this poor, do you think they would tell you about it? A true professional, rarely has this problem, and if they do, they make the necessary repairs because the client paid for a quality job. JUST LIKE YOU! Let the designer do what they want, but you are not liable for their inadequate training and skill. Let the designer know that you are paying for a quality product. I imagine that is why you went with the expensive paper in the first place.
Before he starts the wallpaper, try this with him:

"Bob, I'm really nervous about this wallpaper. You mentioned that some wallpaper opens up at the seams. Before you start, let's talk about how you guarantee your work. I'd rather talk about this now then for us to be angry after it's done."

If he says, "Hey, I guarantee my work, and if you don't like it, I'll fix it," then you're probably in good shape.

If he doesn't, then BAIL.
You have a problem. If you do not tell him, you will have to avoid the room because you can't stand it. Even if you have to have a house decorating party and ask us, from this site to come and help you, I would get rid of him. Your home should feel as it is a castle.
In answer to your question about me being old; it depends on what you consider old. I have turned 21 over and over and over again. In other words, I was born in 1948, but I am still 21,
As each year goes past, it is so hard to believe how many blessings have came over the years. Those things that were done in my younger years and did not seem important at that time, those things have opened my eyes to see that I have not been a complete loss. I learn so much every year. He is covering his ***. That said, there is very little to guarantee that wallpaper won't pull at the seams. In humid climates especially, wallpaper can be tricky. If the application is well done, and if he properly sizes the walls before putting up the paper, then chances are good that you will have no problems. Covering one's *** is not always a sign that they do shoddy work. He may be warning you in advance that there are no guarantees, plain and simple. When dealing with any contractors, don't be shy or afraid to ask questions. It's your house, and you are paying him to do the work. Start by asking for references. Check with those for whom he has performed services in the past, and ask if they are happy with the results. Do not let him proceed with the work until you are satisfied with his references. If he is on the up and up, then he will gladly provide them, and will wait for you to feel comfortable with the quality of his previous work record. If he hedges, or if he says do it now or not at all, then he may have something to hide. When it comes to remodeling, when in doubt, don't do it.
get the hanger to book the paper first and not to use the water method buy a product called extender ...made for wall paper apply to the back of the paper and book it...let sit and then hang the shrinking will happen on the table and not on your wall.good luck
Tell him to install a product that he is willing to warranty. If he is supplying the material, it is typical for all trades to warranty there work and material for at least a period of one year. If he is not willing to comply...tell him to hit the road and find somebody else!
