What can I use to hide shelves in the basement without using anything tacky?

The shelves are in the basement going from floor to ceiliing, and I think it would be hard to install sliding doors.

Answers:
look at the beaded doorway curtain in the tv show dharma and greg
the beads show the picture of the mona lisa.
for a classier look just go with a curtain of plain bamboo or wood beads. (dont use the shiny plastic beads unless you are doing a picture like that and if you wanted a picture like that you can string colored beads and buy/borrow a pattern from someone who sews cross stitch and adapt it to stringing beads)

Other answers:
Tack up fabric. Either use curtain rods, tension curtain rods, or a staple gun or finishing nails.

I don't think it is possible to hide shelves like that. If you want sliding doors, it may be best if you just get them removed, or get them to a different location.

Good Luck
Perfect place for knick knacks. Then you wouldn't have to hide them at all.
Draperies would be an option.
