How many coats of polyurethane is appropriate for refurnishing bedroom furniture?

We are using a red mahogany stain.

Answers:
First thing after staining is to use sanding sealer not thick just cover all areas lightly sand with 120 grit with the wood grain no cross sanding clean dust with cheese cloths they are cheap from paint stores. One coat of Spar-Varish see most painter use (reg) poly-varnish it dont hold up Spar Vanish will and it applys the same way no thicker or no less its a marine varnish i use it to re-finish exteroir doors and furniture anthing i use poly-varnish on i use this.*

Depends, one may do it. Take a look after the first coat.
It really depends on the finish you are looking for
-high gloss finish-use about 3 coats, put the first coat on let it dry completely then sand it a little, put on the second coat let it dry sand it a little, then put the third coat on, and let it dry completely before placing in the house

-medium gloss finish-do about 1 to 2 coats follow the same procedure

-low gloss- use one coat, apply the coat, and let it dry completely

for an oil finish--this is no gloss, but still has a nice frshly dusted looke to it-use an oil finisher-ask the a lowes or home depot associate for help-apply between 2 and 4 coats to get the finish you desire, but make sure to let each coat dry completely before appying the next
My preference is to put no less than three coats on.
Put the first coat on and let it dry completely.
Then sand with 220 grit sand paper.
After sanding, clean with mineral spirits before putting on the second coat.
Apply the second coat and let this dry completely.
Sand this second coat with a 220 grit or finer sand paper.
Clean with mineral spirits before putting the third coat on.
(Note: Make sure when you apply the polyurethane you do not allow bubbles to appear. If you see bubbles, brush them out. Bubbles in each application will affect the finish.)
You should try to apply the polyurethane in a well ventilated area free of dust.
three coats with a light sanding between each coat should be ok..BUT you need to use a lacquer sanding sealer first to stop the mahogany stain from bleeding through..go to a real paint store (not lowes or home depot) and ask for specific recommendations
