I am about to renovate my very small federation style bathroom. Should the tiles be big or small?
Answers:
Small tiles.....I was watching a makeover show and they said that things should go hand in hand.....just like in fashion. You wouldn't put a large person in a tiny checkered outfit....and vice versa....you wouldn't put a tiny girl in a large flower patterned outfit. I dunno. I could be wrong but I do watch a lot of those home makeover shows and that has always been standard.

Small tiles will make the batchroom look bigger because your using more of them.
I assume your talking about the floor right? I would go with nothing larger or smaller then 6 x 6 tiles....keep the walls and ceiling a light color without a lot of hanging attachments. Nothing makes a small room feel smaller then clutter.
Larger tiles in small rooms is better.
But if you like the small ones then use them.
I dont always conform to things if I decide I like something better.
Its your bathroom and you have to live with it so see what you like and go with it.
For me, small tiles make the room seem more proportional and not overshadow the rest of the room.
Small.
I think small tiles would look better then big ones. I hope your bathroom looks good after you get he new tiles put in. I'm mad because my room painted like a foe finish and the people did a horrible job and got paint on the ceiling so now we have to go pay a bunch of money to get it fixed! :(
I once was a tile setter and now my husband does it. I recommend larger tiles in small bathrooms. 12x12 tiles will make the bathroom look larger. Go purchase about 4 or 5 tiles and lay them down with your grout lines and step back to see for yourself. Most people don't see this until it's finished completely. Good luck....
large tiles take up the space better and reduce grout lines making it easier to clean and you end up seeing more of the tile
for the floor if you place the tile on a diagonal you will end up seeing the largest area of the tile as well as having the optical illusion of pushing the bathroom dimensions out to their furthest point (you eye gets fooled into thinking the room is larger)
putting tile on a diagonal will require are tile cutter
remember light grout on walls darker on floor (keeps the grout from discoloring with wear and tear)
also... if you want to get a nice look use large tiles in a subway patter... place one row of tiles side by side, then the next row up you offset or stagger so that the grout lines are not all in a straight line, repeat the process
