Measuring a room for paint.?

How do I measure a room so that I can figure out how much paint to buy? Also, how do I know it will cover with only one coat?

Answers:
The paint can will say how much that particular paint tends to cover. Add up the lengths of the walls, and then multiply times the height of the room. Don't subtract for openings. It's better to over estimate then to go back. Sometimes if they have to remix it, they don't always mix the color as a perfect match. So it's better to have it and not need it, then to need it and not have it. And get the best paint that you can. Check with Consumer Reports for the best paints. I've had good luck with Sherwin Williams Duration and Benjamin Moore's Matte finish. Give the room two coats. The second coat really gives an extra depth and richness.

Other answers:
Measure the width then the height. Do it in meters then multiply both and you get meters covered. you usually need 2 coats to get a lovely finsh but it depends on the brand of paint and type and also what you are painting over.

12x10 room is 120 sq ft
10x10 room is 100 sq ft
ADD extra if it goes pass standard 8ft walls.

If it raw Sheetrock 10x10 more than a gallon because of soaking into bar Sheetrock mud plus you have to figure our you applying trick are thin.

Painted room 10x10 8ft walls # 1 gallon.*

Coverage depends on deep base and clear base paint, (example) Red its made with a clear base could take # 8 or 10 coats.

Maroon i have used a rose base and covered in one but you always need to apply (2) coats unless you painting so close to the original color you just got lucky.

On the can it says # 450 sq ft maybe second coat maybe they should remove this from the can because they do not know what surface you are painting.
if you are paining over drywall, one gallon of flat paint will cover about 450 sq. ft., gloss will cover about 400 sq. ft.; over plaster this number is reduced to about 250 sq. ft.

Multiple the height and width of each wall in the room to get square feet, and add all the answers together for each wall to get square footage for the room.

As for the number of coats required, it will vary depending on the original color of the room and the color you are applying. In most cases, 2 coats are required.
a room 10 x 10 is not 100 sq ft
the ceiling is
the walls are say 10 ft long x 8 ft high that's 80 sq ft
times 4 walls is 320 sq ft plus the ceilng is 420 sq ft
a gallon for paint will cover 300 sq ft (approx.)
