When interior painting, do you paint ceiling or walls 1st, and light or dark colors 1st?

Paint the ceiling first then the walls. It's a lot easier to paint the line between the wall and the ceiling with gravity on your side.
To paint the line, I dip the brush about a half inch into the paint, then wipe off one side of the brush. I put the brush near the line with the painted side of the brush against the wall. I flow the brush along with a thin line of paint flowing up the bristles, with just a few bristles actually near the line, getting within a sixteenth of an inch. Once I have the line, then I dip the brush again, and brush on a brush width of paint under the line, and then feather it out so that it doesn't show a paint ridge on the wall. Then I use a roller to first coat the wall. Then I cap the paint for a couple hours, then I second coat the wall. With the first coat in place, it makes it much easier to see the exact line where the ceiling meets the wall, and paint a perfect line
I have seen those machines which claim to paint a perfect line, and they don't. They usually end up about an eighth of an inch shy and not perfectly straight. There is no substitute for the human eye when finding that line.
Light tends to die in corners, so if you hit the line perfectly, you might not even be able to see the line.
As far as light or dark colors, it depends on the situation. Most dark colors will cover with two coats, light colors might require primer and two coats. Yellow is the worst covering color, so if you're painting yellow, just keep painting until it's covered.

When painting you should always start at your highest point wich in your case the ceiling. Its best to start with the light colorsthen go to the dark.
