Cost to build a wall?

I'm getting quotes to build a 14' long, 10' high wall with one door to create a bedroom in what is now a studio. The wall will be simple 2x4 construction with sheet rock. The floor is cement, as is the ceiling.

I have no idea what a reasonable price is, and just don't want to get screwed.

Thanks for your input.

Answers:
You should do it yourself, it would be very easy and probably 60% cheaper. The you will space the 2x4 every 16 inches so about 20 10 ft 2x4 = $80.00, dry wall for 2 sides will be about 12 sheets of 4x8 so 120.00, and the door will be anything from 45-200.00 depending on the type and quality. You will need about 50.00 in supplies like screws, tape and mud, about 80.00 for trim pieces like molding and 40.00 for paint. The cost of labor will probably be about the same as the supplies, maybe a little bit more.

Other answers:
My suggestion is to go to Lowes or Home Depot and ask for them to quote you a price for a 140 square foot room to include the following list:

2X4's
Sheet rock
Mud and Tape
Paint
Door
Trim

Then base your decision on who to get to build it after you consider their labor costs as well. If you are not doing any ceiling or floor work then you should be OK on the cost of labor and materials on the walls. I would give you a cost, but all of those things I have mentioned vary from day to day and without going to the stores it would be hard to tell.

Good Luck!

Actually, for a project this small and simple it would probably be cheaper/easier in the long run to hire someone. Average rates for residential contractors run around 15% and remodels can run up to 20% for high end work. Think about it...materials and labor around $400 (very rough estimate) would put the mark-up around 60 bucks. Most contractors charge a minimum, but even at $200, would doing it yourself be worth the headache?
This answer is coming from a complete non-professional in this particular field (although I've done some basic carpentry and managed to build a 320 sq ft addition onto an existing home).

Do yourself a favor and price out some things at a building materials center -- it won't take too long, esp if you have some idea of how things are built and what will be needed. Estimate the number of 2x4 studs plus price of door plus price of sheetrock (compute sq ft needed to cover all surfaces) plus hardware, fasteners, stuff like that -- it sounds like a basic job, shouldn't be too hard. Add in some bucks for any electrical work -- costs for that should be kind of low. Flooring costs, too, whatever you're choosing. Once you have a figure that tries to compute the TOTAL materials cost (and don't be overly generous -- estimate conservatively) then multiply by 3. That's your ballpark figure; you wouldn't want to go too far over that price. You're gonna do the painting and finishing yourself, right? If not, throw that money into the mix.

Of course prices will depend on where you live. Where I live, you'd pay x dollars -- two hours to the west (rural Pennsylvania) you'd pay much less and just an hour to the east (central Jersey, close to NYC) you'd pay double or more.

Good luck and because I feel like this answer puts me out on a limb... I hope this is good advice.
