Can the dark wood stain on a door be removed and replaced be a lighter color stain ?
Answers:
You may end up having to sand or plane quite a bit of material off of the door first. It all depends how deep the old stain penetrated and how much lighter you want it to be.
Strip off as much of the old finish as you can with paint stripper. Then try to stain a section with the new stain. If it is still too dark you'll need to sand or plane until you get below where the old stain is. Lots of work!
Good luck!

It all depends on what kind of wood it is.If the wood is dark, without the stain on it,you can not make it lighter.Check a spot to see what kind of wood it is first.Good Luck

Sand it down first with coarse paper second with fine paper....Use minwax stain, but don't brush it on use a cloth and wipe it in.
take the door off the hinges and outside. Lay it across some saw horses and look at the bottom or top rim of the door. that might give you a clue as to how dark the wood is. if no luck there, i would put some stripper on the bottom rim of the door and follow instructions for removing stain. that way if it is awful looking you havent ruined the entire door. m
