What do you think of window awnings?

The lower-front of my home is pretty bland, 28' x 12'H grey stucco, with two windows and a door. I'm thinking of putting awnings over the windows (1930's home, would fit in neighborhood). Does anyone have opinions about canvas versus aluminum (vertical)?

Answers:
As an interior designer concerned with curb appeal and house value, awnings can add to or detract from both of these in a heartbeat. Most of the aluminum vertical types are rather industrial and unattractive. However, there are many manufacturer's who make very attractive canvas awnings which will add to both your curb appeal and your home's value. One design in particular, manufactured with Sunbrella fabric would be an asset to your 1930's home, won't fade, mold or mildew, can be washed off with a garden hose and comes in a variety of colors and patterns. The sides are wrought iron capped by finials and the awning drapes between them. Absolutely charming!

With grey stucco, burgandy will pop and coordinate well. They even have half round awnings with valances that could work. I'd call all of the ones in your area for their free in home estimates, look at the fabrics they offer, their designs and construction with your application.

Aluminum awnings look cheap, detract from the appearance of any home, and devalue the property, regardless of what eveyone else has on the block. Canvas looks nice, but is a pain..if you choose canvas, make sure it is 'Sunbrella" fabric..will not rot or discolor. But, surely there is something else you could come up with. Awnings will darker the interior of your house and rarely look all that good. Use them if you have strong sunlight coming in and it causes a problem. there is nothing wrong with a clean appearance..Have you considered shutters as trim?
dont get awnings.
They could be quite attractive and certainly would go with a bungalow style home circa 30's. Choose a color that would be a third color perhaps blue, green or deep red to add a note of contrast. Canvas might be really great, less expensive, and easier to replace with a different color the following year. Also, depending upon your climate, you might want them up during the winter months.
I like the awnings. We striped ours with the trim paint we used on the house. They help keep the afternoon sun out, a real plus for keeping cool in the summer. The ones we had in Florida were the drop down type to protect the windows when there was a hurricane.
