can wicker furniture be kept outside or will it mold, mildew, etc.?

we have wicker furniture in our sun room but are moving to a new place with a covered deck, would it be okay to leave our furniture on the deck? we live in ohio.

Answers:
In order to protect it, spray it with 2 coats of non-yellowing polyurethane. You may also want to spray it with DampRId Mold and Mildew Remover and Protector at the end of each season. I have had mildew and mold problems on wicker that was kept outside in both the Cleveland winters and the rainy Cincy season. The DampRid provides a great barrier and will keep it from growing. To be on the extra safe side, I would order some furniture covers from someplace like Home Decorators or check at the Depot and Lowes before summer's end. I have all weather wicker and still cover it every winter though I'm living in SoCal now.

Wicker is nothing but dry wood. So, if it has been surface treated properly, it will survive outdoors.

unfortunately i have experienced both mold and mildew on my wicker outside. turned all black and had a foul smell . was told to apply varethane or other type of sealer to so call "weatherproof" this type of furnishings. this does work and in fact there is outdoor wicker that is covered with such . the coatings should be placed on thick and probably 2 or more coatings should be okay.
Wicker should be treated just like wood. It needs a protective coating of something; clear sealer, paint, etc. As long as it dries out quickly in the sun, you should have no problems.

You can cover it in the winter to protect it from snow and melting snow. Just give it a spray of water in the spring and check for any areas that may need to be resealed. It should last indefinitely.
I tried leaving my painted wicker furniture outside on my porch
even thru the winter. Not a good idea as the paint becomes so affected that it dried, cracked and chipped off. Ineeded to use
a wire brush on it to get rid of the loose stuff, then re paint it with
a good exterior primer and paint. The pieces are ok but the framing is loose. Better to just bring the furniture inside whenever
the weather changes.
