Decorating toddler girl's room?

My family and I are buying a new house, and I was just looking for some ideas on ways to decorate my 2 years old daughter's bedroom that will last her a few more years than a fav cartoon character would. Any ideas?

Answers:
For young children, I prefer picking a color scheme and then using accessories to change the look of the room. Stick to 3 or so colors that you and she like that go well together.

Find or make curtains and bedspread/pillows in fabric that fits your color scheme. Try to stay with theme-neutral patterns, like solids, stripes, checks and/or polka dots. (There are lots of fun "modern" or "retro" style fabrics out there that looks great in kids' rooms.)

Find some picture frames that you like...pictures on the wall can easily be switched out as her tastes change. You can frame magazine pictures, her own artwork, family photos, or purchased art.

As she gets older, her toys and belongings will provide lots of decoration and a sense of her personality. Maybe she'll collect teddy bears or become fascinated with flowers. Using color as the main "theme" right now will keep her room from looking too overdone and busy when her interests shine through.

Flowers and butterflies are always good. Lavender and or yellow paint. A picket fence headboard. You can even get pretty decorated bird houses and use them as decorations.

flowers or butterflies ladybugs etc
You could paint things that will aid her learning. You could write the alphabet and numbers. You could also write the names of different colours, each in the appropriate colour. You could paint shapes too.
Since your daughter is so young, you need to choose a color that you like. I would suggest a medium shade. Not too dark, not too light. The second decision would be to decide whether you want white furniture or a wood tone. Once you have made those two initial decisions think about a theme. Don't do anything really trendy or too childish. Maybe use some antique dolls or toys (maybe even some of your childhood toys or trinkets. Try creams and pinks w/ a french country feel, cream or white furniture and use antique dolls or picture frames to accessorize. Use fabrics that have plaids, stripes, and even small florals. But be sure not too get too prissy..she's sure to hate that about age 7 when she thinks she is too grown up for little girly rooms.
Use a garden theme with flowers, butterflies, birds etc. Or try a mermaids garden with bright fish, sea anemones, sea horses, whales etc.
How about a rain forest with monkeys parrots, vines.
Or pick one color and use different values of that colors and do a room where she can add art work as she gets older and that way the room well take on her personalty as she grows. You can start with cartoons she like now, use removal art work like posters and cling stickers.
I quit doing the cartoon character thing as well with my 5 and 8 year old a long time ago because they were constantly changing what they liked. Just do it in pretty colors and don't have a theme just cute little things you could pick up here and there and add to her room that you think would be eye catching to her. My daughter has a little bit of everything but still on the same color scheme. She likes pictures of her family as well. I made a collage frame up with pictures of our family for her to enjoy in her room. Kid's are smart for their age nowadays take her with you and just pay attention to what seems to catch her eye or attention and you might get some ideas. When they are that small they like a large variety of things so you might add a little of this and that.
