Does a four-poster bed need bedskirts?
Answers:
Doesn't "need" a bedskirt, but... a bedskirt is one of the simplest ways to get color into the room and tie other items together in a color or pattern motif.
You will also want to consider whether you can see the boxsprings when the bed is made. Most poster bed frames are not going to cover the box springs, and most comforters/bedspreads are not going to reach far enough to cover them either.

I KINDA LIKE THEM BUT YOU DON'T HAVE TO HAVE A BED SKIRT. IT WILL DEPEND ON THE LOOK YOU'RE GOING FOR. AS WITH A LOT OF DECORATING ISSUES, IF YOU LIKE THEM GET ONE, IF NOT, DON'T. GET WHAT YOU WANT TO LOOK AT... AND PAY FOR!

A bed skirt gives a bed a "finished" look. It can make the bed "feel" elegant, or "frilly/fancy" depending on the fabrics used.
Box pleated bed skirts give a very "traditional" look to a bed. Full and ruffled, give a more "relaxed" look.
Try a bedskirt in a contrasting color to your comforter, add lots of coordinating pillows to the bed for a really great look.
If you cant find one ready made that you "love" they are really quite easy to make. Measure the length and width of your box spring, cut muslin with an extra inch for seaming. Find a fabric that works with your comforter/decor. Buy twice the length and width of your box spring. "Gather" the fabric and sew to the muslin. There are also patterns available which will show you how to make the box pleats.
