Is there a formula for making an octagon shape with equal sides?
Answers:
Yes, it has been awhile, so here goes. Draw a equal four sided square. Then draw a exact same square and place it over the first square but turn it so the second square points are in the middle of the sides of the first square. Then connect the points of the two squares and it will come out eight sides. I hope you can understand what I wrote. Good Luck..

yes... but I can't remember the procedure right now... I lerned that about 12 years ago!

Use excel, put a 1 in each of 8 cells going down, then click insert from your menu and insert a chart - choose a pie chart... size your pie chart to the size you need and then connect the spots where the lines intersect with the circle and you have an octagon with equal sides.
Draw a circle, draw diameter line, then another diameter perpendicular to first. Draw a line between the two ends of lines at circumferance, bisect that line and draw a diamter at that point. Repeat one more time with the next two adjacent and you will end up with 4 diameters...now, connect all the ends of diameters, one after another and you will have a perfect octogon of equal sides. Good luck, and this is easier shown than described.
A circle has 360 degrees. An octagon has 8 side and 8 joints. Each joint equals 45 degrees. Half of that is 22 1/2 degrees. Cut 8 pieces with a 22 1/2 degree angle on each end of equal length. Good to go.
