Glass is good if you want to show off the wood, but can be expensive. Plastic is a cheaper alternative- a couple bucks at any fabric store. But how about a table runner, placemats for end tables (yes they are not just for dining anymore)or tablecloth if it is a dining set(you did not specify). Any department store would have these and they can be colour co-ordinated. Or if you can't find any you like they are easy to make- cut fabric in any shape needed Then sew on premade binding to all edges.
