Any upholsterers out there? I need help deciding if my 12-year-old sofa bed is worth recovering.?
Answers:
First of all check out your frame. Is it still sturdy? How about the mattress and cushions? Are they still firm?Does it need new batting on the arms? You can go to a fabric store and they usually have pattern's for the recovering process. Is it sturdy enough to warrant stripping off the old material and padding to keep it. Do you have the tools and help to stretch the new fabric into place? What kind of material do you want to replace it with? How much will it take? How much per yard? Or do you simply want to sew a new throw cover? You can buy sheets to make new throws fairly inexpensive. You can also go to surefit.com and order directly through them. They have a wide variety of materials and styles. Your local fabric shops usually know someone that they contract work out to. Ask around. If you want a quality reupholstering job it may be worth it to contract out the work. Do you want to keep this sofa for another 12 years, or would you be replacing it soon ? I've heard of prison inmates that do the work for you for a lesser fee than what you would pay professionals. So do your homework, and check out the "Pros" and "Cons"!

It depends on whether or not your sofa bed was a quality one on the high end. If not, get a new one, they are made much better now with far better metal works. Upholstry is very costly, at least a real professional job. Not just the labor but the fabric as well. About the same as a new medium to high priced sofa......
