I'm getting new hardwood installed, and have a dip in my floor. Is there an easy way to fix the dip?
Answers:
Depending on how bad the dip is there are several routes. You can spread a leveling compound over the floor it the dip is slight. If you can get to the joists either try to jack them up using an elephant jack ( just be careful as to how much you raise the floor, you could cause cracking in the plaster and shifting in cabinets) I have also cut shims to fit between the joists and old sub floor, drove them in and ran screws down from the top to hold them in place. The last two are only feasible if the floor is open from below. Another tip, if you drive shims in, is to use a subfloor glue on the shims otherwise in the future you may find that you floor will squeak. I hope you can resolve the problem! Ideally, you should look at the entire floor and make sure that the entire floor is level and sound. Some outfits will go ahead and install a 1/8" foam pad then the wood floor. Others may lay down a 1/4" luan sub floor first. You need to talk to an installer to see what is best for your situation.
Yup. get a compound, like the one they use to fill in dents in cars, and spread it out over the whole dip. Then use a long flat-sided piece of 2x4, to slide across it, to flatten it to the level of your floor. Let it dry completely, before putting a new flooring material on top.
You can try to support it from underneath. If that isn't an option, and if the subfloor is being replaced also, you can 'sister' 2x's to the joists.
one thing you can do but would result in losing 3 inches between your floor and cieling is to use a mud compound to level your floor, than install a second subfloor then your hardwood floor. (Of course if you are going to that much problem, install heating in your floor as well)
the subfloor needs to be checked/replaced, then add floor joists for strength. also inspect the entire floor.
