What is it in water-based paint primer that makes you feel lightheaded if you breathe in too much?

I was priming a wall in the bedroom, where a border once was, and the primer fumes made me lightheaded and nausous.

Answers:
The generic term is a Volatile Organic Compound (VOC). It varies from product to product so look for products touting a Low VOC emission.

Other answers:
A water based primer would be of a low VOC content so shouldnt make you feel light headed. Were you breathing more than usual smelling the paint? you probably hyper ventilated
